The Pandemic, in 2020, gave me one of the greatest gifts of my life – soft pastels – a completely new medium to paint with! Lockdowns were very good for my art. I had plenty of time to paint, to read about art and to watch art videos. I had always wanted to paint landscapes but my results with watercolour & acrylic left me wanting in this department. It was an accidental use of a soft pastel one day that showed me how magical a medium it was. That was the start of my landscape journey. Since then i have painted over a hundred soft pastel landscapes & sold almost half of them. During this time my daughter and some kind friends have helped me to acquire some of the best brands in the market- Terry Ludwig, Dakota Blue Earth, Diane Townsend, Unison, Mungyokorea, Sennelier, Rembrandt and Sennelier. I have fallen in love with the texture enhancing and colour saturating pigment sticks – some hard, some semi-hard and some soft and buttery and I am amazed at the colour range available. Soft pastels are hugely expensive but getting into the habit of doing underpaintings with other media brings down the amount of pigment required in the final, top layers. I am working towards a show in 2023, done entirely in soft pastels. So far i have only done landscapes in this medium. I hope to expand the scope to flora and fauna as well.
